Happy New Year! the financial markets were very volatile this week with massive swings in either direction depending on the news of the day. The major news release this week was the Employment Report for December. The report far exceeded expectations showing we have a very strong job market. In December the economy created 312,000 jobs while 184,000 were expected. The Unemployment rate increased from 3.7% to 3.9% due to a large influx of workers joining the workforce. Interestingly, the majority of the jobs created went to workers that are 55 and older. Wage growth is closely watched as it can create wage pressure inflation. The average hourly earnings increased from November and are up 3.2% since last December. The stock markets really liked the strong employment report and reacted favorably while mortgage rates increased after the report was released. The good news was that on the week, even with the increase on Friday, rates still improved for the week

Housing News
CoreLogic released their Home Price Index for November, showing home prices rose slightly in November from October levels. The year over year price appreciation moderated a bit from 5.4% to 5.1%. CoreLogic’s home price appreciation forecast for the next year is 4.8% appreciation which remained stable from their October report
